Late Winter Raptor Hikes with Larry Broderick

Larry BroderickCome join raptor enthusiast Larry Broderick in the Baylands for a look at overwintering and resident birds of prey during our first raptor identification hikes on these lands. Resident birds we may see include red-tailed hawks, kestrels, harriers, kites, red-shouldered hawks, and if we’re lucky, we might even spot a golden eagle. Possible overwintering raptors are ferruginous hawks, merlins, cooper’s hawks and sharp-shinned hawks. Join us as we focus on where to look for raptors, what their habits are, how to know what you’re looking at and how to compare the characteristics of species.

Saturday, February 25, 1–4 pm at Tolay Creek Ranch
raptor sitting on a rockThe acquisition of the 1,665-acre Tolay Creek Ranch in 2007 completed the protection of a habitat corridor extending from the wetlands fringing San Pablo Bay to the foothills of Sonoma Mountain. The Tolay Creek Ranch was one of the last remaining opportunities in the Bay Area to protect a freshwater-to-salt-marsh ecosystem and includes two and a half miles of Tolay Creek, which flows into San Pablo Bay. The property is now permanently protected and our management incorporates cattle grazing, creek restoration and native habitat improvement. It is slated for inclusion into the adjacent Tolay Lake Regional Park in the near future.

Sunday, March 11, 1–4 pm at Sears Point Ranch
hawkSLT's acquisition of this 2,327-acre property in 2005 was the first step in protecting and restoring this scenic property located on the edge of San Pablo Bay between the mouth of the Petaluma River and Tolay Creek. The vision for this restoration is to restore tidal, seasonal and riparian wetlands, streams and upland habitats for a wide range of native plants and animals, to protect open space, and to develop public access and educational opportunities — including extending the San Francisco Bay Trail.

This is a Level 4 hike. To register, write to outings@sonomalandtrust.org.
