Glen Oaks Ranch Open Days for members
Quarterly Outing Series
The Sonoma Land Trust quarterly outings series for members features protected lands throughout Sonoma County and the occasional field trip to Land Trust partners with lessons in sustainability to teach us. Hikes and presentations require different levels of fitness, with some slideshows and some straight-ahead strenuous hikes and a spectrum in between. Whether at a summer solstice journaling afternoon or a scramble in the Mayacamas, members get acquainted first-hand with the places their contributions preserve.
Early Spring Member Outings

Sometimes reading descriptive words isn’t enough to give a good picture of what you’re trying to understand—especially when making decisions about conserving lands. Mapping is a way of telling a story intuitively, giving the overall picture at a glance. Deciding what story to tell and how best to depict it is what GIS Manager Joseph Kinyon’s work is all about. Come join us for a look at some of the many maps we use at Sonoma Land Trust to tell the story of our protected lands!

Come join us to observe the northern migration of the gray whales off the Sonoma Coast. The individual whales will be nearing the end of their peak migration as the cow/calf pairs begin theirs, staying close to the coast for protection. We will hike up to the USGS marker on a prominent point of the Headlands and set up with a spotting scope and binoculars to await the show.

Landowner Susan Smith has identified more than 300 species of native plants on her ~80-acre property, having thoughtfully managed the land to encourage natural diversity for decades. Protected by one of the Land Trust’s earliest conservation easements, Nefertierra’s distinct plant communities reflect soils, slopes and exposures of the site. Come prepared to micro-examine the many wildflower species in bloom and learn to see the world through the eyes of a botanist.

Sunday, April 28, 10am-2pm

The native serpentine wildflowers are perfect little specimens to learn how to draw, and late April is the peak season for wildflowers at the Jenner Headlands. Join naturalist Joseph Kinyon for a day in the wildflower meadows and try your hand at sketching these beauties! We’ll have some time together learning techniques to make your hand do what your eye wants it to, and then we’ll spend some time apart practicing on our own.
